La Diablesse

When Laurie awakened, she was lying on the sofa in the living-room. The lights were off, and the flame of the fragrant oil lamp put out. The plaid, cashmere throw that was previously draped on the ottoman, now warmed her legs…Avery was nowhere to be seen. She lay there for a while, wondering if she’d imagined the wonderful evening they both shared.

At 2:30 am, the wind was still protesting, beating against the window panes, and – moaning, as though to intentionally wake those who were in a deep slumber in the wee hours of the morn. Laurie stood up slowly and looked around her, she glanced at the counter top where Avery had placed his keys earlier and then at the coat hanger in the entry way; his black blazer was gone, and so were his keys. As she approached the kitchen, she noticed a white sheet of paper from a memo pad sitting on top of the bar. It read:

“Thank you so much for dinner and the wonderful night! You were out cold, and I didn’t want to impose, so I decided to head home. I truly enjoyed your company and hope to see you very soon. Avery.”

Laurie was disappointed. Her more adventurous side secretly hoped that Avery would’ve stayed the night since their attraction to each other was no secret. Realistically, she knew it was insane to expect anything from their brief acquaintance; she didn’t know much – if anything about him. Then again, she wasn’t going to risk the one substantial chance of getting Petro-Val linked with a reputable, global, oil company. She’d waited too long for an offer like the one Avery presented and wasn’t taking any chances that would jeopardize it.

“Ah – dang it – you left without telling me! Ahhh… just, great! You probably think I’m a hopeless drunk too.” Laurie said, annoyed at herself, as she rubbed her eyes and pushed her hair away from her face.

As she walked up the stairwell to the master suite, she had to admit; Avery did the right thing, he was a gentleman indeed, and she had no qualms about that. Her sinful side wished he’d seduced her. Her life of celibacy was pathetic and made her feel as though she’d reached some sort of expiration date, way before her time.

On the other hand, she felt like crap, and her head spun from over indulging on wine. In retrospect, it was best that he had left. By her own assessment, she’d already overstepped her bounds by becoming vulnerable in his presence; it made her cringe.

When Laurie approached the bedroom door of the master suite at the top of the staircase, she saw a sudden movement below, in the living room that caught her attention. The hedges were visible through the glass windows that opened into the courtyard on the first floor; they were taking a good beating from the possessed, wind.

Then, out of the blue – Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” came blaring from the iHome music system, and startled her silly.
